This education programme is run as a group over a number of sessions.  The ultimate content of each session will be determined by the needs of the participants as each session happens.  Over the course of the programme, conductor will learn, review, practice and observe at least the following:

 

  • Common meter conducting patterns
  • Use of body language in conducting an ensemble
  • Symmetrical and asymmetrical beating patterns
  • Conducting subdivisions
  • Showing entries and cutoffs
  • Showing dynamics
  • Changing tempo during a movement, between movements, and fermatas.
  • Phrase direction and length
  • Function of the non-dominant hand
  • Effective rehearsal techniques

    This course seeks to give basic training in conducting for those who have very little or no experience leading an ensemble. It will cover the fundamental techniques, both in terms of physical conducting patterns and also basic information on rehearsal techniques and repertoire choices appropriate for each group.
